A YEAR-IN-REVIEW

March 2 2024. A peaceful naked protest in the contested area of Apaa in Amuru/Adjumani, Northern Uganda against extra-judicial killings in the region. The protest followed daily tribal clashes and killings between the locals and the army in the area. Hundreds of people had been killed in past years. Media reports suggests that over 500 people had lost their lives since 2010. Freedom Hive Uganda took initiative and carried out a peaceful protest in a highly guarded Apaa region. The protest was successful, since then, no more killings have been reported. https://x.com/SuunaKing_James/status/176396159868989065

The protest followed media reports about gross embezzlement of public funds and abuse of office by the speaker of parliament Anita Among and other members of parliament. This protest came to be the first phase of #March2Parliament protests in Uganda. The protest aimed at mobilizing the country to stand up against corruption, saw the arrest of our Executive Director, Suuna King James and gay rights activist Ronald Agaba. The two were detained for for days before being charged for incitement of violence, they were remanded to Luzira Prison. They became the first anti-corruption #March2Parliament protesters to be imprisoned in 2024. https://x.com/anderlukson/status/1768893792659165640 https://76crimes.com/2024/06/13/ugandan-prison-a-hell-for-gay-inmates/

July 23rd #March2Parliament Peaceful protest. Following the public outrage among Ugandans over rampant corruption, embezzlement and abuse of power, Freedom Hive Uganda once again took the initiative and mobilized people to demand for accountability. The mobilization that started on social media on 20th June by our Executive Director culminated in the 23rd July anti-corruption peaceful protest in Uganda. Many young people took to the streets to demand accountability and resignation of speaker Anita Among. Over 100 people including four of our members were unfortunately illegally arrested and charged with ridiculous charge of common nuisance. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/oped/commentary/july-23-march-on-parliament-in-the-pipeline-will-it-succeed–4689812#story https://x.com/Freedomhive_Ug/status/1806944161435656598 https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd1r250my18ohttps://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2024/07/uganda-authorities-must-unconditionally-release-protestors-still-unlawfully-detained/
