JUSTICE FOR WINFRED MWESIGWA
September 2024, Winfred Mwesigwa Nakazana, a 32-year-old mother of one disappeared from her workplace. She was the principal of Kawempe Community School of Health Sciences. That evening, Nakazana had walked out of a heated staff meeting and was never seen alive again. Before her disappearance, Nakazana had called a friend using the office landline, saying the meeting hadn’t gone well and that she would share more when she got home. Her laptop was left open on her desk, indicating she intended to return. Strangely, the school’s CCTV cameras had stopped working from 8 pm to 11 pm, the exact time Nakazana disappeared. The cameras were mysteriously switched back on at 11 pm. Two days later on 17th Sept, Nakazana’s lifeless body was discovered in a deserted area in Makenke village, Nangabo sub-county, Wakiso District, about 15 km from the school. Her father Peter Mulwanyi reported that Nakazana had a dark patch on her cheek, suggesting she had been beaten. Mortuary reports also revealed that Nakazana had been raped and suffocated. Nakazana’s family disclosed that she had been seeking another job due to tensions with her colleagues who were unhappy with her leadership despite her being the youngest. Previously Nakazana had survived a poisoning incident after eating food from the school. The school is owned by Hon. Herbert Kinobere the Member of Parliament for Kibuku County. However, despite the family’s pleas, no one has been arrested and there has been no progress in the case.
The Police is still calling on the public to come forward with information, raising questions about their investigation efforts. The family and community are seeking justice for Nakazana’s tragic death, urging the Police to take concrete actions to hold those responsible accountable. Winfred’s life was brutally cut short and the authorities are lazy in their investigations. We demand justice for Winfred’s life. #Justice4Winfred #EndFemicide
