Strengthening Solidarity For Justice, Human Rights Advocates Join the call for Bail and Fair Trials in Uganda.
Freedom Hive Uganda had the honour of engaging with a delegation of students and human rights advocates from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. The delegation is part of the prestigious Master of Laws (LLM) programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.
This visit formed part of our ongoing collaboration with the Centre, which has been a vital partner in our advocacy efforts at Freedom Hive Uganda. Together, we are working to combat judicial harassment and challenge the complicity both active and passive of judicial institutions in the repression of dissent and political freedoms.
A central pillar of our current campaign is the urgent call for the release on bail of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutaale, along with with many other political prisoners who remain in detention far beyond the constitutionally permitted timeframe without their bail applications being heard. This is not only unjust but also a violation of fundamental rights as enshrined in Article 23 of the Constitution of Uganda, which guarantees the right to bail, and Article 28(1), which ensures the right to a fair and speedy trial.
The meeting was further honoured by the presence of prominent human right lawyers Eron Kiiza who represents Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale in court and Micheal Aboneka, a dedicated advocate for civil liberties and justice in Uganda.
We are deeply grateful for the Centre’s solidarity and commitment to human rights that transcends national boundaries. Their presence and engagement reaffirm the importance of international partnerships in amplifying local struggles and holding systems accountable.
Together, we continue to push for a justice system that is truly impartial, rights-based, and grounded in the rule of law not one used as a tool of political suppression.
